mHealth = Unprecedented Opportunities to Make People Healthier

Mobile health (mHealth) provides unprecedented opportunities to measure dynamic changes in health state and the key physical, biological, behavioral, social, and environmental factors that contribute to health and disease risk. In the last decade a significant number of mHealth technologies have been developed and applied to advance health research. They include wearable and mobile sensors for data collection; discovery and validation of novel mHealth biomarkers; software platforms for large-scale participant enrollment and data collection; big data software for data analysis, visualization, and discovery, and mobile apps for self-monitoring and intervention.

A recent mHealth Technology Showcase brought together technology developers and health researchers on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The goal for the meeting was to discuss how these communities can work together to improve the specificity, reliability, and validity of health indicators identified from data collected from wearable and mobile sensors, in the context of rapidly evolving and increasingly complex and diverse technologies.

The showcase featured two keynotes, a panel discussion, sessions on funding and grant writing, and demos from 16 technology developers and another 50 posters on mHealth research.
